Words cannot express how truly grateful I am for our community and my students. Today was many days all shoved into one with every moment an adventure. With the day starting with a fire, all of our classes were modified down to half hour classes. Normally this wouldn't be a huge concern but today was the second busiest day of the year in horticulture and reducing it all down to 30 minute classes almost made our endeavors impossible.
Club members showed up to help organize at lunch to prep for our after school tomato and pepper sale. Many people preordered so all those bags were prepped to be picked up. We took note in the chaos however that 3 of our most favorite varieties of tomatoes were missing. We aren't sure what happened - either they didn't get planted or they weren't properly labeled but we had to trouble shoot.
In class students had to power through, finishing their Unusual Container Gardens for display at the art show. We squeezed this project in early so they could be ready in time. I wish we had taken a picture of the disaster we left the greenhouse in, but the results were well worth it. During the art show this evening I saw all sorts of people pointing out favorites, striking up interesting conversations over several and lots of pictures taken! Kids and adults alike marveled at the creativity. These were also graded on creativity of container, obvious design, overall proper planting skills, and labeling of the plants used.
Then there was the sale. This is our largest fundraiser of the year and today was day 1. We topped our 1 day totals from last year and really want to thank all of the teachers, parents, students and community members who came out to purchase plants. The students who stayed to clean up were real heroes staying to school until 7 lugging plants back to the greenhouse. I'm not sure who took the most flights of stairs today but I'm thinking J (both of you), C, Cl, K, M, and M did an awful lot of it!
